The rest of the evening passed pleasantly with the three women – four, if Ruby was counted – taking a light supper in the dining room, pre-prepared by Cook so that it was easy for the ladies to serve themselves. Aunt Mary apologised each time a potato had to be taken from a dish for the lack of a servant, until Cressida told her that it really wasn’t a problem and in fact some of the very smart houses in London had done away with evening staff too. Dotty raised an eyebrow at this fib, but it pleased Aunt Mary, so she let it go with just a small kick under the table aimed at her lying friend’s shin.

They then returned to the parlour, where the fire had burnt down to the embers, though it was easier to revive it than to start one afresh in the drawing room. Cressida was finally able to sit her aunt down and look through the samples that Maurice had bought. By the fire, she and Aunt Mary scrutinised the paisley prints, floral chintzes and lushly shimmering silks and Aunt Mary begrudgingly agreed that many of them – in fact almost all of them – would be a better match for her elegant parlour than the “really quite jazzy” wall coverings she’d seen at Lady Silverton’s new modern place down in Sandbanks.

‘We had a wonderful walk along the sands and took that chain ferry over to the other side of the bay where Peter Langton – you remember him, the one with the florid face and three boats – well, he laid on a champagne lunch for us. Luckily I’d packed sandwiches as he’d quite forgotten the lunch part. Also Mousey Silverton, you remember her – married to the chap with one leg and a penchant for watercolours – well, she wanted to go sea bird spotting, and luckily I’d brought my binoculars, though it turned out she mistook the sign at one of the beaches for meaning something quite different and got chased back to the main road by a man in the altogether. Naturists, you see, not naturalists. Anyway, she recovered from it all on this rather lovely, very modern chaise, you see, and that’s when I first realised I liked the idea of the Nouveau style. Though I promised Mouse I wouldn’t use any pattern with a, well you know, on it, lest it give her a funny turn.’

Cressida had listened in stunned awe as this story was told. No wonder her aunt had survived widowhood so well since Uncle Roly had died; she had a way of teaming her eminent practicality with her innate sense of fun. A role model indeed for a well-connected, well-off, single woman.

After they’d looked through a few more samples, Aunt Mary finally agreed that perhaps the orchid pattern was a no-go. Cressida tidied the samples away and Dotty told them all about the most recent detective novel she’d been reading. She had just got to
